Kwon the Run
Is a meme based on Band on the Run a Studio album by Paul McCartney and Wings
Kwon Do-hyung more commonly known as Do Kwon, is a South Korean cryptocurrency developer who co-founded and is CEO of Singapore-based Terraform Labs. Terraform Labs is the unlicensed company behind the Terra blockchain, which features the stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) and network token Terra (LUNA). TerraUSD and Luna both collapsed in May 2022, wiping out almost $45 billion of market capitalisation over the course of a week
Interpol issues red notice for Terraform founder Do Kwon
Kwon completed high school at Daewon Foreign Language High School and studied computer science at Stanford University, graduating in June 2015. He worked as an engineer at [Apple](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.) and Microsoft for three months each. Afterwards, he returned to South Korea to start a company in September 2015.
Kwon is the co-creator of Terra, a blockchain for payments. One of Terra's main features was TerraUSD (UST), which is a so-called algorithmic stablecoin that is meant to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar. UST stablecoins were not backed by US dollars; instead, UST was designed to maintain its peg through a complex model called a "burn and mint equilibrium". This method uses a two-token system, whereby one token is supposed to remain stable (UST) while the other token (LUNA) is meant to absorb volatility. Investors who deposited UST in "Anchor Protocol" were receiving roughly 19% yield that was paid out from Terra's reserves. Due to such a high-yielding mechanism of the "Anchor Protocol", some critics raised concerns that Kwon’s stablecoin model could function like a "ginormous Ponzi scheme".
In response to British economist Frances Coppola and others who criticised his "algorithmic stablecoin" model, Kwon repeatedly mocked them by calling them "poor" and "cockroaches". He has also stated that he finds "entertainment in watching companies (other cryptocurrency firms) die" during a live interview with Alexandra Botez. When asked via Twitter by concerned investors about where the capital for the yield reserves of the "Anchor Protocol" was coming from, Do Kwon responded, "Your mom, obviously"
With approximately 200,000 domestic Luna investors harmed by the crash, groups of Korean investors announced that they will be filing a class-action lawsuit against Terraform Labs founder Kwon on criminal charges. As of 17 May, more than 1,600 investors have signed up for the lawsuit with domestic law firms, L.K.B & Partners LLC and Kisung LLC.
A class action, Patterson v. TerraForm Labs Pte Ltd. et al, was filed against Kwon and others in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on 17 June 2022.
Hacktivist group Anonymous has pledged, in a video uploaded to its YouTube channel on 26th June, that it will "make sure" that Do Kwon is "brought to justice as soon as possible" following the collapse of the Terra (LUNA) and TerraUSD (UST) ecosystems in May 2022.
